Why a Select Comfort Bed

The first thing that someone will want to know is what is a sleep number bed and what will it do for them.

What is a Sleep Number Setting?

A Sleep Number Setting, which can only be found on a Sleep Number Bed by Select Comfort™, is a number between
zero and 100 that represents the ideal combination of mattress comfort, firmness and support for your body, giving you
the best night’s sleep possible.
See why Sleep Number beds make the best mattress for couples. Through our unique air chamber technology couples can set their own Sleep Number setting making it the perfect bed for you and your partner. Your Sleep Number Setting is a calculation based on your height, weight, sleep position and sleep surface preference.

What is a Sleep Number bed?

Unlike traditional mattresses that are made from metal coils and springs, The Sleep Number Bed by Select Comfort™ uses
uniquely designed air chambers to provide a gentle cushion of support which can be easily adjusted to your preference for
comfort and firmness. In addition, the Sleep Number bed allows couples to individually adjust each side of the bed to the
precise comfort level each partner prefers.
Some Proof:
Back Pain Clinical Studies

Select Comfort™ sponsored and obtained full reports on two clinical studies related to back pain during 1997. The studies were conducted by The Sister Kenny Institute at Abbott Northwestern Hospital and the Physical Therapy at the Marsh Health Center in conjunction with Sleep Fitness Center.

The Subjects: Each study involved 30 subjects who were recruited to participate. Each subject had to be a chronic low back pain sufferer who was currently sleeping on an innerspring mattress less than five years old. The study populations had approximately equal gender representations, about half of the subjects were in the 40-55 age range, and no more than 25% of the subjects were diagnosed with the same cause of back pain.

The Study: The studies were conducted in order to clinically confirm and quantify, if possible, the hundreds of consumer testimonials Select Comfort has received over the years tying use of Sleep Number® beds to relief of back pain and the results of an internal back pain study that Select Comfort had conducted during 1996.

Each subject received a new, unmarked Sleep Number bed the same size as his or her innerspring mattress. The study protocol included:

  1. Sleep on the Sleep Number bed for 28 nights
  2. Sleep on subjects own innerspring mattress for 14 nights

SF-36 Health Surveys were completed by each subject prior to sleeping on the Sleep Number bed, after the 28 nights of sleeping on the Sleep Number bed, and after the additional 14 nights of sleeping on his or her own innerspring mattress. Visual analog scales for sleep quality, pain and general perception of well-being were completed by each subject prior to starting to sleep on the Sleep Number bed and for each of the succeeding 42 nights. The results were scored by Nistar Data Systems and the statistical analysis was reviewed and approved by Dr. Mark Werness of the University of St. Thomas.

The Results: The overall results of the studies, in terms of the subjects’ experiences with the Sleep Number beds as compared with their own innerspring mattresses, were as follows:

  • 93% of the subjects reported back-pain relief
  • 90% reported reduced body pain
  • 89% reported improved sleep quality
  • 82% reported increased physical functioning
  • 77% reported increased vitality
  • 67% reported reduced daytime sleepiness
  • 62% reported increased general health
  • 58% reported increased social functioning.

In a report on the clinical studies conducted by Sister Kenny Institute and the Marsh Health Center, entitled “Lower Back Pain and Sleep Quality is Improved with an Adjustable Sleep Surface,” that was published in the April 1998 edition of Sleep, the Official Publication of the American Sleep Disorders Association and the Sleep Research Society, the researchers summarized their findings as follows:

“In this study, the [Select Comfort] adjustable sleep surface provided improved pain relief and improved sleep quality for a statistically significant number of subjects with chronic low back pain.”

A subsequent article regarding the results of the Sister Kenny Institute and Marsh Health Center studies, together with the results of a later similar clinical study conducted at Hennepin County Medical Center, was published in the Medscape General Medicine electronic medical journal in September 2000. In this article, entitled “Short-Term Outcomes of Chronic Back Pain Patients on an Airbed Versus Inner Spring Mattresses,” the researchers, in conjunction with another researcher from the University of Minnesota Clinical Outcomes Center, concluded that “[t]he [Select Comfort] bed appears to be a useful sleep aid and an adjunct to medical and physical therapies for chronic back-pain sufferers.” More specifically, for all three clinical studies taken together, the researchers reported the following statistics for subjects sleeping on the Sleep Number bed:

  • 95% of the subjects showed a decrease in pain
  • 88% reported an improvement in sleep quality
  • The average improvements were a 32% decrease in pain and a 73% increase in sleep quality
  • 85% of the subjects preferred the Sleep Number® bed
  • 87% of the subjects reported an improvement in the bodily pain dimension
  • 81% of the subjects reported an increase in the physical functioning dimension and reported statistically significant declines in the same dimensions when they returned to their innerspring mattresses

Finally, the researchers reported “that most patients with chronic non-specific back pain will have improved sleep on the [Select Comfort] adjustable bed.”

Each Side of the Bed Adjusts Independently

Unlike traditional mattresses which are made from metal coils and springs, The Sleep Number® Bed by Select Comfort™ uses uniquely designed air chambers to provide a gentle cushion of support which can be easily adjusted to your preference for comfort and firmness. In addition, the Sleep Number bed allows couples to individually adjust each side of the bed to the precise comfort level each partner prefers.*

Did you know that 9 out of 10 couples are not comfortable on the same mattress? That’s because ordinary mattresses don’t allow each of you to adjust the firmness. Why settle for a one-size-fits-all fixed-firmness mattress that’s either too soft or too hard? For about the same cost, the patented air-chamber technology of a Sleep Number bed lets each of you set the mattress to your exact level of comfort and firmness.

All it takes is a simple touch of a button and you’re on your way to a perfect night’s sleep. Our easy-to-use handheld remote and advanced Sleep Number Firmness Control™ System allows you to quickly adjust the bed’s firmness on your side of the bed. So whether you like your bed extra firm or feather soft, you’re always in control.
